Programme Planning, Claims & Contractual Risk: Why Most Projects Get This Wrong
    10 July 2026
    Webinar

Programme Planning, Claims & Contractual Risk: Why Most Projects Get This Wrong (Webinar)

    Date : 10 July 2026

    Webinar fee : $30.00 (SIBL/BEMA/CIJC members) / $40.00 (non-members)

    Synopsis

Programme planning is often seen as a formality—but in reality, it is where many claims and disputes begin. Poor logic, unrealistic durations, weak coordination, and inadequate scrutiny create programmes that may appear acceptable on paper but fail under actual project conditions.

This seminar explores how such weaknesses develop from the earliest stages of a project and how they contribute to delay claims, commercial disputes, and contractual uncertainty. Participants will gain practical insights into how programmes can be used not only as planning tools, but also as effective contractual instruments to manage risk, support entitlement, and strengthen commercial control.

The session will examine common programme-related issues including poor baseline development, unrealistic sequencing, logic manipulation, float erosion, and unreliable updates. Through practical examples and real project case studies, participants will learn how to identify early warning signs, improve programme credibility, and avoid avoidable disputes.

The seminar will also address disputes arising between Main Contractors and Subcontractors, particularly in relation to delays, access constraints, late release of work areas, incomplete information, and coordination failures that impact the critical path of works. These issues frequently form the basis of Extension of Time and cost claims under subcontract agreements. Relevant case studies will be presented to demonstrate how programme weaknesses and poorly coordinated contractual obligations can escalate into disputes if not properly managed from the outset.

Ultimately, effective programme planning is not solely about achieving timely completion—it is a critical component of claims avoidance, contractual risk management, and successful project delivery.

    Key Elements

    · Understanding Why Programmes Fail

Explores common industry issues, including poor baseline development, unrealistic assumptions, and misuse of programmes as reporting tools rather than effective management tools.

    · Recognising Early Warning Signs

Identifies warning signs such as logic changes, float erosion, and narrative-driven reporting that often indicate emerging delay claims and programme risks

    · Programme as a Contractual Tool

Demonstrates how programmes can support contractual correspondence, substantiate entitlement, and reduce reliance on retrospective claims.

    · Project Phase Risk Awareness

Highlights how risks originate at different project stages, including design misalignment, tender-stage manipulation, poor interface coordination, and ineffective programme updates during construction.

    · Main Contract & Subcontract Risk Management

Examines how programme weaknesses, delayed information, access constraints, and coordination failures contribute to disputes between Main Contractors and Subcontractors.

    · Good Practice in Programme Planning

Outlines practical measures including clear logic, realistic sequencing, resource validation, coordinated interfaces, and disciplined programme update processes.

    In Essence

Programme failures are rarely accidental - they are often embedded from the outset through poor planning decisions and insufficient scrutiny.

By treating the programme as a strategic and contractual tool, rather than merely a compliance exercise, project teams can identify risks earlier, make better-informed decisions, and significantly reduce the likelihood of disputes.

Strong programme planning is therefore not just good project management - it is a critical component of effective claims avoidance, contractual risk management, and commercial control from both Main Contract and Subcontract perspectives.
